Carlos Sainz of Ferrari during second practice ahead of the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix at Las Vegas Strip Circuit in Las Vegas, United States on November 17, 2023. Proponents of the "Netflix effect" often point to a poll taken in 2022 which found 28% of American adults considered themselves to be F1 fans, with more than half crediting "Drive to Survive." If this were true it would mean there were an incredible 72 million F1 fans in the U.S. alone. This argument runs out of road slightly however, when you consider that only 2 million Americans tuned in to watch the 2023 Miami Grand Prix. Today, F1 fans are estimated to be around 40% female, up from just 8% in 2017, as well as significantly more culturally diverse.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The signs are all around downtown Indianapolis now: NBA All-Star weekend finally has arrived. Posters of the All-Star players cover Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the NFL's Indianapolis Colts and host to All-Star Saturday Night, and Gainbridge Fieldhouse, home of the Pacers and WNBA's Indiana Fever and site of Sunday's All-Star Game. There's even a larger-than-life graphic of Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton on the towering 33-story glass facade at the JW Marriott hotel. “When we had to shift the All-Star Game off of 2021, we were trying to figure out when it would work out and we landed on 2024,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in October. “But that three years, I think, has really turned out to benefit us.”Now, the Pacers appear ready to shine under the spotlight of a second All-Star weekend.

Larson nearly lost control of his Arrow McLaren Chevrolet during a four-plus-hour test at Phoenix Raceway on Monday, but the NASCAR star and 2021 Cup Series champion managed to save his Indianapolis 500 ride from hitting the wall at 180 mph. “I went into Indy car turmoil, got a little bit loose into the corner, got to the apex. Formula One's invitation to Andretti Cadillac for an in-person meeting about its application to join the motorsports series was sent via email and landed in a spam folder, which is why Michael Andretti and General Motors representatives never answered the request. The junk email revelation came Friday as Andretti Global sought to clarify two points in the sharply critical document F1 released earlier this week in rejecting the Andretti Cadillac application. An in-person meeting to discuss commercial matters would be and remains of paramount importance to Andretti Cadillac,” the team said. “Andretti Cadillac has been operating with 2026 as the year of entry for many months now," the team said. He then petitioned F1 to expand the grid for what Andretti claims will be a true American team in the series.

The Spaniard is starting the season unbothered and ready to chase a third IndyCar championship with Chip Ganassi Racing. Midway through his second season, Ganassi said he'd picked up the option on Palou's contract for 2023. McLaren is now suing for an exorbitant figure Palou certainly can't afford, and Palou in his legal response admitted to breach of his McLaren contract in a bid for the legal wrangling to focus only on actual damages Palou owes McLaren. So he sat before AP smiling and totally unbothered by this nearly two-year Ganassi and McLaren tug-of-war over his employment. "Pato can wait for someone to get hurt.”Since Palou's change of mind, McLaren has named Pato O'Ward, their 24-year-old IndyCar driver, as the F1 reserve.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The playoff beard had been shaved off well before fresh-faced Ryan Blaney arrived in Nashville to celebrate his first NASCAR championship. That's a bit fitting, though, as Blaney this year also contributed to two new marks on Penske's impressive motorsports resume. Then you've got to gel with a team.”The breakthrough came in 2017 at Pocono when Blaney beat Kevin Harvick for his first Cup win for Penske. “He won the race at Pocono, it's ironic, racing Harvick and Harvick is retiring now and Blaney is now champion,” Penske said. The up-and-coming indie twang band Wednesday released a track called “Formula One” on their 2023 album. Glynn Wedgewood, COTA's senior vice president of music and entertainment, says the track first introduced live music performances with Elton John in 2015. “Artists in Residency can really help bridge that gap.”Tiësto, a lifelong F1 fan, released the album “Drive” in April, featuring an F1 racing helmet on the cover. LAS VEGAS (AP) — General Motors said Tuesday it has registered with Formula One's governing body to become an engine supplier starting in 2028 in what is seen as a huge boost to Michael Andretti's bid to join the global motorsports series. “We are thrilled that our new Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be powered by a GM power unit,” GM President Mark Reuss said. GM in January announced its partnership with Andretti Global under its Cadillac banner on Andretti's application to join F1. GM doesn't have its own F1 power unit and said its effort would be in conjunction with an existing manufacturer. If Andretti gets approved to join an expanded F1 grid, he would have to use another manufacturer's engine until 2028.

Vasser Sullivan started the IMSA sports car season strong enough that it was quickly apparent a championship was finally in reach for the Lexus factory program. Team owners Jimmy Vasser and James “Sulli” Sullivan think it might have saved the season. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kyle Larson looked like a natural turning his first laps in an IndyCar. “Like I said in (a Cup car) you'd be really tight in (turn) one, like you're off the gas. You'd be tight in (turn) two and then you would have better balance in (turns) three and four,” Larson said. “ This has way more downforce and speed than a Cup car, but the balance of all four corners felt way more similar than a stock car. At one point, Larson accidentally hit a button on the steering wheel that he said prevented the car from moving.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. The FIA decision does not guarantee Andretti will get the two-car team he wants. “Andretti Formula Racing LLC was the only entity which fulfils the selection criteria that was set in all material respects. Only four applicants completed the entire process; Andretti, with engines that would be General Motors-badged under the Cadillac banner, was deemed to be the only worthy applicant. Andretti has said his team will really be the American team with an actual American driver and the backing of GM and an American sponsor. Josef Newgarden Wins Indianapolis 500

He continued: “But I think a lot of people view this race and this championship with that lens. After the race, Newgarden brought his Chevrolet-powered car to a stop on the front stretch, jumped out and found a hole in the fence, diving into part of the crowd, estimated at more than 300,000, to celebrate. Then, Newgarden climbed the fence to mimic Helio Castroneves, the longtime Team Penske driver and four-time Indy 500 winner. Newgarden, a 32-year-old from Nashville, is the first American to win the Indy 500 since Alexander Rossi in 2016. He led five of the 200 laps and beat Ericsson in the fourth-closest finish in 107 years with a margin of victory of 0.0974 seconds.
After two weeks of testing, practice and qualifying, the drivers are now ready to start their engines and step on the gas ahead of the 2023 Indy 500. “It is the biggest sporting event in the world, right?” British driver Katherine Legge told CNN Sport’s Don Riddell. Katherine Legge is taking part in her third Indy 500 this weekend. Darron Cummings/APHow to watchHeld on Sunday May 28, the Indy 500 is broadcast live from 9:00 a.m. Legge called the achievement “awesome.”The driver set an incredible average speed of 231.07 miles per hour when racing for the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team.
CNN —Josef Newgarden won the 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 in a wild finish Sunday after three crashes in the last 16 laps. When the checkered flag finally waved after nearly three hours, it was Newgarden who claimed his first Indy 500 win – but getting there required a lot of drama. The green flag waved again with one lap to go, and Ericsson initially extended his lead over the chasing Newgarden. But Newgarden caught Ericsson and slingshot past him on the back straightaway to reclaim the lead. “I’ve always wanted to go into the crowd here in Indianapolis,” Newgarden said in a postrace interview on NBC’s telecast.

Jan 12 (Reuters) - Kyle Larson will attempt the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 double next year after announcing on Thursday he would join Arrow McLaren Racing for a one-off run at the famed Brickyard. Larson, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion, will become the first driver to attempt the double since Kurt Busch raced in both events in 2014. Only four drivers have attempted the double of racing in Indy 500 in Indianapolis and flying to Charlotte, North Carolina to jump in a car and run the Coca-Cola 600 later that same day. While Rick Hendrick's stock car teams have won a record 291 Cup Series races, the Indy 500 will mark Hendrick Motorsports first IndyCar series event. McLaren have routinely added notable names to their driver lineup for the Indy 500, including twice Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso.
